Grow Seeds Indoors - Week 6 Results
Posted by: dan.thomas.dt in caterpillar food, butterfly food on Apr 3, 2009
Unfortunately, I had a setback two weeks ago with a death in the family. I travelled back to my home town in Wisconsin. During my stay with family in Wisconsin I was unable to care for the seedlings for 7 days. As a result, I did lose quite a few plants.
The surviving plants were the Coreopsis, Anise Hyssop (pictured), Hollyhock, and Butterfly Bush. These plants are doing very well under the fluorescent lights. The plants are now getting to be about 4 inches tall. I will be repotting them into larger containers (peat pots) this weekend where they will continue to receive 16 hours of fluorescent lights until it is time to plant them in the butterfly garden outside.

Next Steps
As a result of the plants that did not survive, I planted two more flats of seeds using my indoor plant growing equipment like the Jiffy Professional Greenhouse on Thursday, April 2. As the plants germinate, I will continue to shift them out of the germination flats (Jiffy Professional Greenhouse) and move them into flats under the fluorescent bulbs (about 4-6 inches from the daylight T8 fluorescent bulbs - I will be creating a video shortly to show my setup). I am using a timer for the fluorescent bulbs to provide 16 hours of light daily. Additionally, I have an oscillating fan on its low setting plugged into the timer to make sure it doesn't get to warm under the lights. As the plants grow, the breeze from the fan will also help the roots establish themselves.
