My Butterfly Garden Plan - Part 2: Butterfly Habitat
Posted by: dan.thomas.dt in shelter, caterpillar food, caterpillar, butterfly stages, butterfly species, butterfly food on Jan 7, 2009
It is recommended that a butterfly garden plan address all butterfly life stages(butterfly life cycle) to provide a healthy butterfly habitat and attract a variety of butterfly species.
Butterfly Habitat Considerations
- Butterfly species located in your area
- Host plants to support female caterpillars eggs, to provide food source for developing caterpillars (larvae), and to support the formation of a chrysalis
- Nectar plants (butterfly food) for when the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis
- Minerals and water for "mud-puddling"
- Shelter
- Basking
- No Insecticides
- Location
In the My Butterfly Garden Plan series of blog posts I will go into greater depth on each of the bullet items above.
