My Butterfly Garden Plan - Part 8: Grow Seeds Indoors
Posted by: dan.thomas.dt in videos, caterpillar food, butterfly food on Feb 23, 2009
Now that I have a butterfly garden plan and my seeds have arrived in the mail, I am ready to begin growing seeds indoors in preparation for Spring planting.
Pay attention to the germination time for your plants. Also, many seed packets will provide information on how many weeks in advance of the last frost to plant the seeds. The BackyardGardener is a good source for germination information for a variety of plants.
Step 1: Seed Germination
Listing of Supplies:
- Jiffy Professional Greenhouse (aka Ferry-Morse Seed #5272 Pro Greenhouse Kit) - this kit comes with 72 peat pellets
- (Optional) Hydrofarm MT10006 Seedling Heat Mat, 10 By 20 Inches
- Warm water
- Seeds
Steps
- Slowly add 1/8 cup of warm water to each peat pellet
- Drain excess water from the greenhouse tray
- Plant seeds
- Peel back netting on peat pellets
- Fluff up peat and level off
- Plant 2 to 3 seeds in each pellet (follow seed instructions on how deep to plant)
- Cover with peat and light pat (do not overly compress as the seeds need oxygen)
- Cover with plastic dome on greenhouse tray
- Place greenhouse tray on seedling heat mat
- Remove plastic dome daily to allow fresh air in the greenhouse and wipe off moisture on the plastic dome. If the peat gets dry, be sure to lightly spray fresh water on the pellets before placing the plastic dome back on the greenhouse tray.
- Wait for seeds to germinate!

We (my kids and I) love raising Black Swallowtails, Monarchs and Gulf Fritillary butterflies in particular. I am lucky enough to have a partially heated mini-greenhouse (enough to keep it from freezing) so I can start seeds early in the season. We raise parsley and milkweed from seed and have done some lantana cuttings. I tried to grow common milkweed seed bought on ebay and had no luck with it. I have had great luck using the milkweed seed for "butterfly weed" and "tropical milkweed" collected from our own plants in the Fall. The Monarch butterflies seem to love both of those and I have read that common milkweed is invasive so I guess I was lucky that it didn't take! We raise parsley every year for the Black Swallowtails. We have done both the curly leaf and flat leaf and the butterflies like both. My experience with these is that they are easy from seed but don't let them dry out while they are still in the pot! Anyway, my kids love raising butterflies indoors. It is a great hobby. If you have any interest in raising butterflies indoors we would love to have you visit our website at http://www.joyfulbutterfly.com. Thanks for an incredibly informative blog about butterfly gardens! Loved surfing around in here!
